Now that the last traces of Winter Storm Uri have passed many of us by, we can finally turn our sights into warmer days ahead! We’re less than a month away from the first day of Spring. That means long days at the pool with the kids and trips to the beach. Maybe it’s time to get a new swimsuit or perhaps a beach cover up?! There are countless options for what to wear over a bathing suit. In today’s post I’m rounding up my favorite styles available now.
Living in South Florida, having a wide array of beach cover ups is almost a requirement! But, what cover up you throw on is sort of like deciding if you’ll wear a bikini or a one-piece suit – it can depend on your mood! Like the rest of my style, I lean towards classic, neutral options that will go with all of my bathing suits. Instead of jumpsuits or shorts, I prefer pieces you can throw over your head like caftans or tunic dresses. I’ve found the best of the best for each style of cover up no matter the occasion.

What To Wear Over A Bathing Suit
Depending on where you’re headed, be it to the community pool or a friend’s house for a girls pool day, the cover up you wear may be different. If you’re taking the family to the beach to ride boogie boards over the sand you want a cover up that’s functional, not fussy. What I’m saying is, in order to know what to wear, you need to know where you’re going!
Cover Up Ideas
Tunic Dress
My favorite style of bathing suit cover up is a chic tunic dress like this one from L*Space. It’s flirty and fun, but it gives you plenty of length to chase the kids and not feel exposed. The brand has a bunch of high-quality cover ups and they get cuter each season. This button-up style is another from their collection that I love. A drawstring cinches your waist. Throw on sandals with either of these and you’re set.
Another affordable option that comes in a bunch of colors is this split neck tunic I found on Amazon. It’s only $26!
Maxi Dress
If you prefer a maxi dress, some of my favorites are from a local brand in Miami, Pitusa. Their pieces are really perfect for transitioning from the beach to the street and have fun pops of color, like the style I’m wearing below.
Caftan
Known for their ethereal and boho vibe, a caftan is your hero piece for spring and summer. This is the style I’ll likely be stocking up on the most this year. With their flowy silhouette, it’s the easiest transition from all of the loungewear we’ve been wearing!
This under $100 style by Michael Stars is back this season in a handful of colors. Both the mauve and white colorways are very chic!
Sarong
Perhaps the most versatile bathing suit cover up is the sarong (also known as a pareo). Essentially they’re just a large piece of fabric that you can tie multiple ways. The most common way is to tie it around your waist like a skirt. Even if I wear another cover up, I always keep a sarong in my beach bag. It’s a grab and go kind of item!
I find a lot of great cover ups at Shopbop and they carry another brand I love, Mikoh. They make chic cover ups and bathing suits that fit my body really well (which can be hard to find!). Their leopard print sarong is a must-have piece for this season.
Pants
So, I don’t own any cover ups that are pants. Dresses just tend to be easier to take on and off. But, I am eyeing this pair that has a very Grecian vibe with split sides! The elasticized waistband makes them more user-friendly too.
I hope you love all these options for what to wear over a bathing suit as much as I do! If you need help planning your perfect day by the pool be sure to check out my 5 must haves. Or, you can read about everthing you need for a girls day at the beach.
