One of the most exciting things to do when you’re pregnant is design and plan the nursery. But, what theme will you pick? What paint color? What’s your budget? There are endless options when it comes to nursery furniture. So, it can all be very overwhelming! We may not have a name yet for our baby boy. But, after a little back and forth Matt and I quickly settled on stars and moon nursery decor. The nursery is a work in progress. But, everything we’re planning to purchase is linked in the image below. Just click to shop!
Stars and Moons Nursery Decor
Like the rest of our home decor, our nursery will be fairly neutral. The color palette will be a mix of grey and beige tones to keep it simple. The color grey is calming, promoting thought and emotion. Plus, it’s gender neutral! For the walls, we’ll be using Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige at 50%. We’re sourcing items from a mix of retailers, including Pottery Barn Kids, Restoration Hardware Baby, Target, Etsy and more.

Designing a Stars and Moon Nursery
Picking Out the Big Pieces
My best recommendation when designing your nursery is to start with by picking out the big pieces first. The “big” pieces for your nursery are the crib, dresser (and changing table), and glider or rocking chair. Keep these all neutral and then accent with accessories that are in your stars and moon theme. It’s important to select these first because they anchor the room. Plus, the lead times and shipping can take anywhere from 2-12 weeks or more, depending on availability.
The only crib on my wish list was the Restoration Hardware Colette Tufted Crib. Thankfully, I got it right before it was discontinued! But, the Blythe Upholstered Crib from Pottery Barn Kids is nearly identical.
If you can, try to get a wide dresser with deep drawers. Babies grow so fast and it will be nice to keep a mix of things close by like extra paci’s, diapers, swaddles, outfits and more. PRO TIP: Your dresser and the crib do not need to match! But, it’s a good idea to align the colors like I mentioned above. It can really elevate the vibe and make everything seem more expensive.
We haven’t made a decision on which glider we’ll get. I like how this one by Million Dollar Baby has a USB charging port for those late nights when I’ll be feeding! Then, a few friends have this one from Babyletto which they absolutely love. Both come in a few colors that keep with the neutral nursery theme.
Select your Accent Pieces
The accent pieces are where your stars and moon nursery decor can all get tied into the room. This baby mobile with hanging stars and moons is a must have! There are also lots of options for artwork, but this one is my favorite. We’ll get them framed at Framebridge.
My favorite nursery decor is this wooden moon pram. It’s such a sweet touch!
Then, we’ll add in some texture, dimension, and color. Start by adding this round star-print rug. It comes in a handful of colors. Then, throw a sheepskin rug on top to create more depth. You can also put some throw pillows on your rocking chair like this one.
We’re going to add some faux greenery with this olive tree in the corner. Then, Matt will put up three of these acrylic shelves. We’re planning to stock them with lots of baby books which are always colorful!
Benefits of a Neutral Nursery Design
Of course, to slant this stars and moon nursery toward one gender or the other you can always incorporate hints or pink or blue. Since we’re having a boy, I’ll be adding some blue-grey tones and some olive green in other ways to make it feel a bit more masculine.
I hope you found this post helpful! Designing a neutral nursery certainly has it’s perks! It will be calming while your little one is a baby and should transition easily as they grow. Please leave any comments or questions in the box below. Once our room is finished, I’ll be sharing nursery reveal here later this year. Stay tuned!
