Getting dressed in the winter can be a huge hassle if you live somewhere cold. You need to think about layers and pieces that help hold in warmth and keep you feeling cozy. Although I don’t have a daily uniform, I do like to build my wardrobe from a set of classic pieces. There are millions of us working from home permanently, so I turn to brands like Anine Bing and Commando for items I can throw on to look polished and then run errands in afterwards. In today’s post I’m sharing 4 winter wardrobe essentials that you can wear together or use to build countless outfits from for your week.
4 Winter Wardrobe Essentials
When it comes to what to wear in winter, you need just a handful of basics to keep you looking fresh. First, you need a printed blazer or coat as the building block. Then, add a simple tunic sweater and a pair of the best faux leather leggings (There’s no debate. They’re really the best.). Finally, grab your black boots and you’re set.

Printed Blazer or Coat
Keep the rest of your look neutral and let your blazer or jacket be the statement. Houndstooth is having a moment right now and I’m obsessed! This Anine Bing blazer finally made it’s way into my closet. While it’s listed as a blazer, personally it feels a little more like a coat to me. The material is like a tweed, so it’s a bit thicker and it’s lined. Also, it’s double breasted, so it wraps itself around you a bit to keep you warm. I also love this one and this one.
Faux Leather Leggings
I’ve mentioned these leggings a bunch of times on the blog before (including here), but they’re gold. You can wear these leggings casually like I did in that post with a sweatshirt and combat boots. Or, you can dress them up with a lace cami and heels. But, in winter they look amazing with a simple cashmere sweater and heeled boots. Honestly, they’re just so luxe (and soooo stretchy!). At just under $100, these really look like leather. I rarely say this – but you NEED them.
Tunic Sweaters
Next on your winter wardrobe essentials list are a few simple tunic sweaters (love this one). The reason I like a longer sweater in winter is for layering with leggings (like the ones above). When it comes to the material, I’ll always pick cashmere in the winter. It’s super soft and keeps you very warm! Theory makes some of my favorites. I also love the re-cashmere sweaters from Everlane. The fit is oversized and the sleeves are a bit drapey, making it the ultimate sweater for lounging. They’re still a bit of a splurge, but they aren’t completely out of reach. Plus, they’re made of 100% recycled cashmere yarn.
Black Leather Boots
Last on the list is a great pair of black leather boots. Marc Fisher makes some of my favorites, like this pair. But, combat boots and chelsea boots have been very popular these past few years and are a great winter staple for dealing with snow that’s melted down. They pair perfectly with the leggings and sweaters, but look equally as good with denim and sweater dresses too.
Hopefully this short list of winter essentials helps you build a list of pieces that you wear regularly during the colder months! I consider them basics that are versatile, but definitely not boring! They’re elevated and classic items you can make lots of new looks from for years to come.
